The Chief of Police administers a variety of programs and services designed for the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property within the City of Willits. An ideal candidate will be a hands-on executive with law enforcement experience gained through a career in a community with similar issues and complexity. The Police Chief will be an active member of the City Manager's management team, actively participating in executive-level meetings with Department Heads and staff. The Chief plans, oversees and directs the day to day operations and services of the Police Department, including law enforcement, crime suppression and prevention; works cooperatively with all City Departments and outside agencies; is committed to community engagement and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager. Minimum requirements include: Possession of an advanced POST certificate and POST management certificate; Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration or other related field; knowledge of current principles, practices and techniques of police administration, organization and operation; knowledge of current laws and regulations pertaining to California peace officers and the work of the city's police department; knowledge of crime prevention and law enforcement techniques including but not limited to investigation, identification, patrol, traffic control, juvenile delinquency control, recordkeeping, and the care and custody of persons and property. Experience: Ten or more years of extensive experience in all major phases of municipal police work, including at least three years in a responsible middle management capacity, preferably in a municipal police department.
