POSITION: Full-time, nine-month teaching specialist/lecturer position in Agricultural and Natural Resources Aviation in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department at the Crookston campus of the University of Minnesota starting August 14, 2017. Standard teaching load is 15 credits/5 courses per semester. Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. A competitive fringe benefits package is offered.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide program leadership to an established aviation program which combines agriculture, natural resources, and law enforcement with aviation. Deliver high-quality undergraduate instruction to students in the Aviation program. Deliver flight instruction and teach aviation courses such as, but not limited to: introduction to aviation, airplane aerodynamics, aircraft systems, basic attitude instrument flying, IFR procedures and policies, conventional aircraft operations, certified flight instructor, instrument certified flight instructor, conservation law enforcement, natural resources and law enforcement aviation applications, and agricultural application. The candidate is expected to contribute to program development; advise students; engage in department and campus service activities; participate in recruitment and retention efforts; help expand networking with industry to benefit our programs, student experience, and student employment opportunities. The candidate should be open to teach both on campus and online courses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in aviation or a related field (natural resources, agriculture, criminal justice, biology, or law degree); FAA certified flight instructor (CFI) certificate and instrument instructor rating for single engine airplanes; substantial experience as Pilot in Command of Conventional Gear aircraft; effective communication skills; ability to relate complex concepts to diverse audiences; demonstrated cultural competency, and commitment to an experiential educational philosophy within the scope of the land grant mission. The successful candidate would be expected to complete a master’s degree within 3 years of commencing employment at the University of Minnesota. After one year of full-time appointment, UMC employees are eligible for reimbursement up to 75% of tuition at an accredited university. Final job offer contingent upon complete background check and receipt of official transcripts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master or Doctorate degree in aviation or related field (or graduate credits towards a master’s degree). Experience as a flight instructor or agency pilot; applied experience in agricultural application, natural resources, conservation law enforcement, general law enforcement. Full-time teaching and/or research experience in academic institution, industry experience, track record of obtaining externally funded projects and grants, experience with online education. Doctorate required for appointment as lecturer.
