We are currently seeking a Supervising Network Engineer to join the Network Services department within the Information Technology Services (ITS) division here at USC. The Supervising Network Engineer will be responsible for supervising network engineers and overseeing the installation, repair, upgrade and maintenance of in-house, data, video and wireless network services for the department. The Network Services department provides 24/7 support for the data network infrastructure which is a fundamental component of USC's information technology department.
The ideal candidate should possess at least five years of experience in a networking role. He/she must have strong technical knowledge and experience with Optical networking, LAN and WAN switching, IP routing, Linux server management and administration. Knowledge of data network and telecommunications protocols including but not limited to STP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, BGP, IPv6, SIP, multicast, DNS and DHCP is also required.
This position supervises and/or participates in on-call rotation in support of the network. The successful candidate must carry a mobile phone.

Typically possesses a Bachelor's degree and/an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Must possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in local and wide area networking and network administration of routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, access points and wave division multiplexors
Must possess knowledge and experience with Optical networking, LAN and WAN switching, IP routing, Linux server management and administration
Must be familiar with copper and fiber cable standards, and the tools and techniques necessary to troubleshoot such cables.
Must possess knowledge of network communication technologies including internal and external routing protocols for both IPv4 and IPv6, STP, VoIP, DHCP, DNS, LDAP and Radius.
Must have a solid understanding of information technology concepts for voice and data systems
Must possess experience with network communications and related hardware and software including network monitoring and packet capture software
Strong analytical abilities and reasoning to resolve uncommon problems.
Supervises and/or participates in on-call rotation in support of the network. Must carry mobile phone.
Ability to travel on campus as required
Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience writing, modifying, maintaining, and documenting software tools in a high-level language
Demonstrated knowledge of productivity software such as MS Office, MS Visio and workstation OS such as MS Windows, Apple OS, or Linux
Typically possesses 7 years of directly related experience in local and wide area networking and network administration
Typically possesses experience working with and maintaining routers and switches from a variety of vendors, and in particular, Cisco, HP, and Arista
Ability to coordinate multiple projects and adjust to changing priorities in a fast paced environment

Directly supervises all assigned subordinate staff. Recruits, screens, hires and trains staff. Evaluates employee performance and provides guidance and feedback to assigned staff. Counsels and disciplines and/or terminates employees as required.
Responsible for ensuring the security of network devices and any software used to run or manage them.
Oversees the monitoring of network performance, implementation of performance tuning, and troubleshoots complex network problems areas as needed. Reviews complex network performance statistics and reports. Makes changes, as needed.
Consults with end users to determine complex network hardware and software needs. Analyzes users' needs. Identifies, assesses and develops requirements for new and existing computer networks. Recommends and designs appropriate network configurations to meet users' business needs and departmental standards. Reviews subordinate network engineers' configurations and makes adjustments, as needed.
Oversees the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support and optimization of all network hardware, software, systems, and communication links for university. Manages the installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software and peripheral devices.
Provides expert technical consultation for the design and deployment of local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and wireless networks, including servers, routers, hubs, switches, UPSs, and other hardware.
Coordinates and oversees the implementation and maintenance of bridges, routers, gateways, remote access servers, domain service, security firewalls, application and device servers and Internet or Intranet devices and connections.
Oversees the creation and maintenance of technical network documentations. Prepares reports for management on network performance and maintainability.
Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery. Develops and conducts training programs for subordinate network engineers to ensure continued progress in maintaining technical proficiency.
Stays informed of new developments and technologies by reading journals and other pertinent publications, maintaining contact with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings and seminars.
Develops and implements security related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, recognition of duress signals and key controls. Coordinates security activities with University Public Safety Department. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Maintains knowledge of university’s crime prevention and suppression programs and services. Ensures dissemination of security related information to staff.
Lead and/or provide technical and training assistance to less experienced network engineers, as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
Network Engineering with certifications such as Cisco CCNP, CCNA, Redhat RHCE.
7 years of directly related experience in local and wide area networking and network administration.
Experience with Cisco routers, Extreme/Enterasys switches, Arista switches, HP/Aruba switches, Aruba wireless controllers and access points, Solar Winds, Intermapper, Wireshark, NetBrain, Cisco ONS and MRV wave division multiplexors, Avaya telephony, and ServiceNow.
Experience with Microsoft Visio or other software for creating network diagrams.
Experience with workstation OS such as Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS.
Some supervisory or project lead experience.
