Department of University Communications and Marketing Associate Director, Public Information (Communications and Government Relations Director)

The Associate Director, Public Information working title Communications and Government Relations Director will promote and enhance the image of UW-River Falls by communicating institutional priorities and disseminating key information to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to: campus faculty and staff, local and regional media, state and local government, alumni, the local and regional community. The position will oversee the University Communications and Marketing (UCM) office, supervising the staff and guiding decisions regarding priorities, strategies and actions.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct all institutional communications (50%)
Establish and maintain effective relationships with local and regional media
Lead print, web and social media communications, ensure campus-wide prioritization and integration of messages, marketing objectives and branding
Write feature articles for print publications as well as press releases, media advisories and other copy as needed
Oversee office of University Communications and Marketing, providing leadership for graphic design, photography, marketing and editing services
Oversee written, visual and audio content of the website
Ensure the university’s brand and graphic identity are maintained across media and divisions
Act as Public Information Officer, emergency communications focal point, and University spokesperson as appropriate
Manage the university’s government relations (30%)
Establish and maintain relationships with public officials to help leaders understand the university’s impact both locally and beyond
Coordinate and implement events and other public outreach initiatives aimed at improving public and legislative awareness of key university issues
Act as liaison for communications and legislative relations with the UW System Administration (10%)

Bachelor's Degree required (Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field preferred).
At least 6 years’ experience in public relations, communications, journalism, government relations or similar.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills, especially with regards to a diverse, creative staff.
Ability to think strategically and maintain a “big picture” focus, while paying attention to detail and managing complex multi-stakeholder project execution.
Experience with project management and workflow oversight, including ability to set and abide by project deadlines; ability to prioritize and see projects through to completion; experience managing both urgent, short-term projects and complex, longer-term projects.
Sound communication, storytelling, writing, editing and research skills.
Ability to work professionally and collaborate effectively with a wide variety of constituencies including internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent organizational, time management, and analytical/problem-solving skills, along with a high degree of flexibility.
A minimum of six to eight years of relevant work experience.
Master’s Degree in related field.
Knowledge of A.P. Style.
Knowledge of the current higher education media and marketing industries.
Familiarity with current public and legislative topics related to the University of Wisconsin System.
Working knowledge of Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite and CMS.
