This is a supervisory position assisting higher command in the day to day operation of the department. Sergeants are Watch Commanders, responsible for staff, including staff administrative assistants and student personnel, and may be called upon to be the first on scene supervisor at a critical incident. They are also responsible for the general protection of the community and campus facilities. This is an emergency response position and at any time there may be a need to immediately respond to security, safety, life threatening, or other urgent situations.
Required Education * High school diploma. Bachelor’s degree or 60 units of college preferred. * Required certification: Guard card, tear gas, collapsible baton, 1st aid, CPR, and AED. The guard card, CPR, 1st aid, and AED must be in possession at to the time of hire. * Tear gas, and collapsible baton certification required within the 1st month of employment.
Required Experience * Must have no criminal record. Must possess a current CA driver license. Previous college and/or university campus safety/security/law enforcement experience preferred or equivalent on the job experience.
Primary Duties/Essential Functions * Directs and controls all subordinate personnel. Oversees proper performance of duties and adherence to established rules, policies, procedures and the Chain of Command. * Supervises in-field training. Oversees that each officer is knowledgeable and competent. * Responsible for maintaining safety and emergency procedures. * Patrols university property, in a vehicle or on foot, to provide security and traffic control. * Performs physical security checks of campus facilities, ensuring facilities are in use by appropriate personnel. * Responds and supervises emergency and non-emergency radio calls. * Act as a liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. * Observes, reports, and identifies persons involved in suspicious activities, including suspicious vehicles. Ensures that unauthorized persons leave the university property. * Enforces university policies, regulations, and municipal, state and federal laws. When requested, assist local law enforcement as necessary. * Conducts criminal, non-criminal and administrative and internal investigations as assigned and completes detailed reports. * Assists with the implementation of crime prevention programs. * Conducts on-going training as necessary to ensure officer certification and competency. * Assists Student Life and Residence Life personnel as necessary. Provides on-campus escorts to the university community. * Develop training programs for staff and student workers on a variety of topics relevant to campus safety, law enforcement, etc. * Assist in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. * Participate in the disciplinary process as required when dealing with subordinate personnel and student workers. * Develop strategic plans for special events as well as supervision of the events and deployment of personnel. * Review and approval of subordinate’s reports. * Conduct or assist in quality control audits and inspections of department personnel, activities, and assets. * Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs. * Performs and completes other assigned administrative and patrol duties as deemed necessary under the guidance of the Chief, via Chain of Command.
Skills * Strong and exceptional customer service skills and interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. * Ability to work shift assignments as required by the department, which could include working holidays and weekends. * Ability to conduct crime deterrence and prevention programs. * Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty. * Ability to react calmly and effectively in all situations. * Skills in the use of first aid procedures. * Skill in building security and lock procedures. * Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. * Ability to make judgment calls on sensitive, confidential issues. * A thorough knowledge of: Business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures and practices. * Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects. * Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. * Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. * Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. * Strong organizational skills and detailed oriented. * Ability to maintain confidentiality. * Excellent telephone courtesy knowledge and experience. * Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures. * Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns. * Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions. * Must possess and maintain a clean and valid California Driver’s License.
Mental Demands * In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.
Physical Demands * Must be in good physical condition. * Ability to walk long distances, bicycle, run, climb, stoop, bend, stand for long periods of time and lift heavy objects (50 lbs) over head. Hearing and speaking demands. * Possess the physical strength to restrain, control and handcuff a combative person. * Ability to adjust to varied work shifts. * Skills in the use of CPR and first-aid procedures.
Visual Demands * Requires the ability to read a computer screen, computer-generated reports, and other forms of written documentation.
Environment * Pleasant office setting; varied weather condition when involved in outdoor activities.
Technologies * Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
